Funeral livestreams, online memorial pages, QR-code memorials and online remembrance are some of the options families consider. Lee Wan Yi (李万亿), Executive Director of FLS (福禄寿) Kuantan, sees them as one more way for those who cannot be there to take part, while attending in person and traditional rites remain the way many families prefer to say goodbye.

Why are some families looking at digital memorials?

Many Kuantan families have children working in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or further away. When someone in the family passes away, distance, work and travel arrangements do not always allow everyone to return in time.

In China, online remembrance is already widespread. According to CCTV, citing the Ministry of Civil Affairs, 2,304 online grave-tending platforms were in use on the first day of the 2022 Qingming holiday, with 6.95 million visits. In March 2026, a joint notice by the ministry and three other departments asked local authorities to open and improve online remembrance platforms on the web and mobile apps.

What forms do digital memorials take?

There is no single format; families can use one or several, as suits them.

Funeral livestreams

A private link shared only with family and friends lets relatives abroad follow the ceremony as it happens.

Online memorial pages

Relatives and friends can leave messages, offer virtual flowers and share photos and memories at any time, from anywhere.

QR-code memorials

A QR code on a headstone or columbarium niche links to the person’s life story, photos and videos.

Online remembrance and proxy visits

Family members nearby, or a service provider, visit the grave or niche on behalf of those abroad and share photos or video. Some platforms also let families leave flowers or messages online.

How can a family prepare for a funeral livestream?

Talk with family and elders first about whether everyone is comfortable and which parts suit filming.

Check with the religious officiant, as some families or officiants prefer certain rites not to be filmed.

Ask the funeral service provider about internet access, power and camera positions at the venue.

Choose one family member to manage the link and answer relatives’ questions.

Mind the time difference for relatives in other time zones, and let them know early.

Do a test run before the ceremony to avoid surprises on the day.

What about privacy and family views?

What is shared: the family can decide together how much of the photos, videos and life story to make public.

Messages: if an online memorial page accepts comments, one family member can keep an eye on them.

Elders’ feelings: older relatives may not be used to these tools, so it helps to talk it through gently.

Faith and custom: practice varies by religion and dialect group (籍贯); elders or the family’s religious advisor can help.

Keeping copies: online platforms can change, so families may wish to keep their own copy of photos and videos.

Can digital and in-person remembrance go together?

Many families combine them. Children abroad join the funeral online and later visit the grave or columbarium in person when they are home; during Qingming, relatives nearby visit on their behalf and share photos. Other families prefer to gather in person and use no digital tools at all. All of these are common arrangements, and each family decides what suits them.

How can FLS help?

FLS Life Park 福禄寿陵园 in Gambang, Kuantan opened in May 2026 with the Yunshan Hall columbarium (云山堂灵骨塔), Tianmen Hall (天门殿) and the Hall of the Three Western Sages (西方三圣殿), offering both ground burial and columbarium niches.

In summary

Digital memorials are one way for relatives far away to take part in farewells and remembrance, alongside attending in person and traditional rites. Whether to use them, which ones, and how much to share are decisions for each family to make together.

About FLS (福禄寿) Kuantan: Founded in Kuantan, Pahang in 1963 and run by three generations of the same family, FLS provides cemetery plots, columbarium niches, ancestral tablets, funeral services and pre-planning.
